SIGNIFICANT New Book Published in Conjunction with Illinois Holocaust Museum’s PREVIEW Opening

Memory and Legacy Notable for Its Survivor Testimonies and
Its Showcase of Museum’s Collection

 

Lincolnwood, Illinois, April 6, 2009—Publications International, Ltd., is proud to announce the release of Memory and Legacy: The Shoah Narrative of the Illinois Holocaust Museum. The publication of the 240-page book is in conjunction with the preview opening of The Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center, scheduled for April 19, 2009.

Full color and richly illustrated, Memory and Legacy has been authored by acclaimed Holocaust scholars Michael Berenbaum and Yitzchak Mais. The book details and interprets the history-making events of the Holocaust with more than 250 images, including scores of photographs and artifacts from the Museum’s collection that add a human dimension to the events. The book profiles 18 Holocaust survivors who settled in Illinois; their testimonies, personal artifacts and images heighten the impact of their stories. The book features an in-depth timeline of the Holocaust, with an emphasis on Jewish responses and resistance that is at the core of the entire work as well as the Museum’s exhibition Other stories focus on the Museum itself, including the Youth Exhibition and the works of art in the Legacy of Absence Gallery.

 

Memory and Legacy is being sold at The Legacy Shop, the Illinois Holocaust Museum’s shop and bookstore. The book is priced at $25. The Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center, located in Skokie, Illinois, is a project of the Holocaust Memorial Foundation of Illinois. This new world-class museum is dedicated to preserving the memories of both Holocaust victims and survivors and teaching current generations about the need to fight hatred, indifference, and genocide in today’s world. President Bill Clinton and Elie Wiesel will be the keynote speakers at the April 19 preview opening.

Michael Berenbaum and Yitzchak Mais are the conceptual developers and exhibition curators of the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center. Berenbaum was the project director who oversaw the creation of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., and Mais was director of the Yad Vashem Historical Museum in Jerusalem.

David J. Hogan and David Aretha edited Memory and Legacy. They previously edited Publications International’s The Holocaust Chronicle, which has sold more than 250,000 copies in English, and has been translated into four languages.
