USC Shoah Foundation Institute Co-Sponsors International Human Rights Forum
On February 11-13, the USC Shoah Foundation Institute co-sponsored the inaugural President's Forum on International Human Rights held at California State University, Long Beach, which focused on modern genocides and global responsibility.
The forum was designed to increase education about and awareness of
genocide, to help broaden global understanding of the subject, and to
provoke fresh ideas on how to eliminate genocide and other acts of
extreme violence. Participants included human rights experts, authors,
filmmakers, and survivors of genocide. The forum drew thousands of
audience members who attended panel discussions, film screenings,
and art exhibitions.
Douglas Greenberg, Institute Executive Director and Professor of History
in the USC College of Letters, Arts & Sciences, gave opening remarks at
the forum. On February 13, Greenberg sat on a panel, The Policy
Response and Role of Governments, alongside Klint Alexander, Senior
Lecturer of International Law and Political Science at Vanderbilt
University and former Trade Fellow in the Office of the U.S. Trade
Representative during the Clinton Administration.
"The forum brought together human rights advocates and organizations
from around the world in the belief that genocide prevention requires
cooperation on a global scale," Greenberg said. "The Institute shares
this belief and welcomes future opportunities to join with others in the
struggle against genocide."
